Julian Alvarez, who recently represented Argentina in the Paris Olympics 2024, is poised to make a significant move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid. According to widespread reports on Tuesday, the English champions are set to secure a substantial profit on the Argentine forward, with the deal valued at up to 95 million euros (£81 million, $104 million). This move marks a significant shift for Alvarez, who has had an impressive stint with Manchester City since joining from River Plate in January 2022 for a mere £14 million.

During his stay at City, Alvarez has experienced a meteoric rise, contributing to Argentina’s World Cup and Copa America victories and securing two Premier League titles and the Champions League at the club level. Initially returning to River Plate on loan for six months, Alvarez scored 36 goals in two seasons at City, helping Pep Guardiola’s squad achieve a historic four consecutive English top-flight titles. Despite his remarkable performance, Alvarez often found himself playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland.

Manchester City will benefit from a record sale but may now need to explore the transfer market in the final weeks of the transfer window to find a suitable backup for their Norwegian star striker. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid will welcome Alvarez as the primary forward, especially after the departure of Spain captain Alvaro Morata to AC Milan. Alvarez will have the opportunity to shine under the guidance of compatriot Diego Simeone.

Atletico Madrid is gearing up to challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top of La Liga after a disappointing fourth-place finish last season. The club has already bolstered its squad with Euro 2024 winner Robin Le Normand and Norwegian forward Alexander Sorloth. Additionally, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is on the verge of joining Atletico, with the England international reportedly flying out to Madrid to finalize a £33 million move.

The arrival of Julian Alvarez signifies a new era for Atletico Madrid, aiming to reclaim their position among Spain’s football elite.
