UEFA announces change to the Champions League theme song

UEFA is not only changing the format of the Champions League but also altering the competition’s theme song for the first time in over 30 years.

This decision has elicited mixed reactions among fans who have become familiar with the iconic anthem, which has been a staple from the group stage to the final. The current Champions League theme, composed by Tony Britten in 1992, is an adaptation of George Frideric Handel’s 1727 classical piece “Zadok the Priest.” The music has become synonymous with the competition and its most memorable moments.

The new version of the theme song focuses more on vocals and features significantly less percussion, which many fans feel diminishes the anthem’s power and atmosphere. Displeased fans have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the changes.

It remains to be seen if UEFA will revert to the old theme song before the kickoff of the 2024/25 season. The draw for the group stage is scheduled for Thursday, August 29, 2024.
