As Barcelona gears up for the 2024/25 season, manager Hansi Flick has pinpointed a critical area for the team to focus on: reducing their reliance on defending from the back.

This observation comes after a pre-season friendly against Manchester City, which ended in a 2-2 draw, with Barcelona winning 4-1 on penalties.

Flick’s Post-Match Reflections

In the post-match interview, Flick expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance but highlighted the need for a more balanced approach in defense. He praised his players for their effort and teamwork, acknowledging the quality of the opposition, yet noted an overemphasis on playing from deep defensive positions.

“I am very happy, we saw some great things. We played against a great team with fantastic players. I’m very happy with my players. We defended like a team and we also attacked like a team. But we defended too much from the back. It’s not what I like the most. We have to improve on that,” Flick stated (via BarcaBlaugranes).

Defensive Adjustments Needed

Flick’s comments suggest a shift in tactical emphasis for Barcelona. While the team has been known for their possession-based play, building from the back, the German manager seems to be seeking a more proactive defensive strategy. This might involve pushing the defensive line higher up the pitch or pressing more aggressively to regain possession sooner, rather than retreating and absorbing pressure.

Looking Forward to El Clásico

Barcelona’s next challenge comes against arch-rivals Real Madrid in an eagerly anticipated pre-season El Clásico on Sunday. This match will provide an opportunity for Flick and his players to further fine-tune their tactics and work on the areas identified for improvement. With the new season fast approaching, these adjustments will be crucial as Barcelona aims to reclaim domestic and European glory.
